Handling Water Damage on Your Carpet

Dos and Don'ts of Handling Water Damage on Your Carpet

Here are the dos and don’ts of handling water damage on your carpet.

Water damage isn’t uncommon for properties to experience, depending on where you live. If your property experiences water damage, you’ve likely seen your flooring take a hit. Homes that have carpeting are especially susceptible to water damage. Carpets not only get soaked by the water, but they can also cause mold to develop, turning areas of your house into safety hazards. You need to take action the moment you see water damage start to take its toll on your carpet. Here are the dos and don’ts of handling water damage on your carpet.

Do Turn Off the Electricity

Cutting off the power is the first step you should take before trying to determine what’s causing your water damage problem. You don’t want to be in standing water while a live wire is around because you can get seriously hurt.

Don’t Partially Dry Out Your Carpet

If you only dry out part of your carpet, it lets dampness settle in. This lets mold grow very easily, which can become a health hazard if left unchecked.

Do Try to Find the Source of the Problem With Your Carpet

Knowing the source of the problem is the most important step because you can then figure out how to resolve the issue. If your problem is caused by bad plumbing or leaking, turn your water supply off, then get your plumbing repaired.

Don’t Try Restoring Your Carpet On Your Own

Damage to your carpet is a serious issue, and it takes a trained professional to properly resolve the problem. That’s why you should always trust a professional carpeting company to handle these types of issues.

Do Remove Excess Water After Plugging Up the Water Source

If you can find the source of the water coming into your house, you need to plug it up so that more water cannot get inside. After that, get rid of whatever excess water is still in your house. Towels and buckets can be used if the water levels are low. Mopping is another option you have.

Don’t Use DIY Solutions to Fix Carpet Problems

Trying to solve water damage problems yourself is not recommended. It’s not guaranteed that the solution will be effective, meaning you only waste extra time and money. Get in touch with a professional instead. You’ll pay more money upfront, but you’ll ensure everything is done properly, which saves you more money long-term.
