Color Options for Plantation Shutters

As one of the more fashionable window covering options out there, many people are interested in plantation shutters these days. They have that classic style that manages to look traditional while still fitting in with many contemporary interior designs. This isn’t to forget about the practical benefits of plantation shutters either, as they are great at preventing sun glare and heat loss from getting through your windows. Unlike other options out there, they’re also very durable. If you’re getting plantation shutters, there’s only one more question to ask—what color of shutters should you choose?

Warm Natural Plantation Shutters

If your overall design is rustic or colonial, you may want to consider plantation shutters with a natural wood stain. Something like mahogany or cherry stains are going to be overall more restrictive in terms of design possibilities, but you may be able to match existing furniture or flooring and get the perfect window treatment out of it.

This effect is enhanced if you use plantation shutters made out of real wood in the first place instead of trying to replicate the look. Staining plantation shutters made of real wood is a unique and beautiful touch to a colonial, farmhouse, or beach house style home.

Classic White Plantation Shutters

If your design is anything other than rustic, you’re likely going to want to go with white shutters. This is because they complement virtually any design scheme. Even if you decide to redesign a space from the floor up at some point, you’ll likely be able to keep your white shutters because they work with just about any other color scheme you could imagine. Unlike the natural look, many people opt for faux wood when they pick white plantation shutters.

What About Bold Colors?

It may be tempting to run wild with bold colors for your shutters. However, those strong colors can slowly begin to wear on you over the years. A bright cherry red might be exciting at first, but in time, you may change your mind, and swapping out your shutters is much harder than other color changes, like painting a wall.

If you really feel you’re missing out on color by going with natural or white options, you may want to include an accent curtain which could give you that splash of color and creativity without requiring you to commit to boldly painted plantation shutters.
