Why Your Carpet Has Frayed

Why Your Carpet Has Frayed

Here are some of the reasons your carpet might fray.

Carpeting is something that many homes use, and we like when our carpets can remain soft and luxurious for their whole lifespans. Over time, however, your carpet could start to get worn down, and it will begin to fray. It’s important to know why this happens so you can take measures to prevent it or otherwise address the problem properly if it does occur. Here are some of the reasons your carpet might fray.

Your Carpet Experiences Friction and Grinding

A common reason for carpets fraying is due to dirt that has accumulated on them. Sometimes, the carpet just wasn’t cleaned well enough. When carpets get dirty, the small pieces of dirt work their way inside of your carpet’s fibers. This causes friction between the fibers and the dirt, which wears your fibers down over time.

For this reason, you should get your carpet cleaned professionally once per year at the minimum. The frequency of cleaning should go up if you have pets or young children, perhaps one professional cleaning every six months.

Your Carpet Gets Heavy Foot Traffic

Carpets are known for fraying towards the edges, as well as in rooms that get a heavy amount of foot traffic.  For rooms that get plenty of foot traffic, area rugs are your best friend. They help keep your carpet safe, and they’re much more cost-effective than having to replace your carpet. In addition, area rugs are a countermeasure against dirt and stains that would otherwise be a detriment for your carpeting.

Exercise Caution While Moving Furniture

While area rugs help out tremendously for rooms with heavy volumes of foot traffic, there’s another part of carpet maintenance during which you should exercise caution. If you’re moving furniture around, you don’t want to just drag furniture along the carpeting. Doing this will do a good amount of damage to it.

When you’re moving furniture around, you should always lift it off of the ground before moving it. This keeps friction down to a minimum, which will save your carpet from a lot of damage in the long run.
