Carpet Care Tips for Pet Owners

From vacuuming to deeper carpet cleaning, there are a few ways pet owners can still manage to own beautiful looking carpet even with their pets in the home.

All pet owners understand just how difficult it can be to maintain good looking carpets. It’s so bad that some pet owners go so far as to avoid homes with carpeting altogether, though if you’re a fan of carpet, you shouldn’t have to go without. Keeping your carpet clean even with furry friends in the home isn’t all that difficult, it just requires a bit of discipline and knowledge. From vacuuming to deeper carpet cleaning, there are a few ways pet owners can still manage to own beautiful looking carpet even with their pets in the home.

Set Yourself Up for Success

Before we get to carpet maintenance tips, remember that there are ways to protect yourself right off the bat. This includes looking for stain-resistant carpeting, which is an option worth considering for anyone, pet owner or not. It may be more costly but it will also last longer. If you don’t have stain resistant carpets, consider scotch-guarded carpets. It’s a protective layer that will help protect fibers and prevent additional stains. Either of these options will mean you need to do less maintenance in the future so they are worth considering.

Cleaning Up After Pets

Perhaps the most serious issue that comes with being a pet owner with carpeting is pet urine. Getting pet urine out of your carpet requires you to act fast: first get paper towels, step on those paper towels with your shoes on to help lift up the liquid, and when it’s dry, use a mixture of 1 teaspoon of ammonia per 1 cup of water to help remove the rest. Lightly dab some onto the affected area and use a brush to make circular motions on the spot and, if necessary, use a wet/dry vacuum as well, which can help prevent future staining.

Regular Vacuuming For Your Carpet

Having to vacuum twice or more a week can feel rather tedious, but even if your pet isn’t seemingly generating hair, it is still creating dander. This is why even if a carpet looks clean, it may smell like your pet. Vacuum twice a week and every other time you should move furniture out of the way so you can more thoroughly vacuum. Make sure to take extra care in areas that a pet spends more time, like areas they sleep or play in.

Use Carpet Powder

The market is full of carpet powders specifically geared towards those who own pets. There will be provided instructions but generally, you just sprinkle, let sit, and then vacuum the area a few times until everything is removed, leaving you with a cleaner carpet.

Keep Nails Trimmed

If you let your pet’s nails get too long, it may actually cause damage to your carpets when it gets snagged against the material. This will eventually cause noticeable damage, so it’s important that you or a pet groomer regularly trim your pet’s nails to help protect your floors.
