Maintaining Your Blinds and Shades

How to Keep Your Blinds and Shades in Good Condition

Here’s what you need to do to keep your blinds and shades appealing and functional.

Around your home, there are many things that have to be given care. Blinds and shades are no exception to this rule. With proper maintenance, your blinds and shades will not only look great, but they will also perform optimally. For most people, only light maintenance is needed to keep you from encountering problems later on. Here’s what you need to do to keep your blinds and shades appealing and functional.

Your Blinds and Shades Should be Dust-Free

Your blinds and shades are most commonly threatened by the likes of pet hair, pollen, and dust. There is often plenty of foot traffic where you have them installed, which means dust gets kicked up frequently.

Fortunately, you can remedy this dust problem by creating a rigid dusting schedule. If you dust your window treatments every week, you won’t have to worry about too much dust accumulating. You avoid having to take more extreme measures to keep them in good condition.

To dust them, use a soft brush. You can often find one as an attachment for your vacuum cleaner. When trying to squeeze into tight nooks, go with a duster or even an old sock. As long as it can fit into the small area, it will do just fine. Lastly, for any areas on your slats and fabric that have more stubborn dirt and dust, a mild cleaning solution and some warm water should do the trick. This gets rid of resilient stains that couldn’t be removed by other means.

Get Rid of Wrinkles

Blinds and shades look their best whenever they are free of wrinkles, creases, folds, and bumps. Many factors contribute to wrinkling, including humidity and having your blinds and shades raised for an extended amount of time. There are two things you can do to get wrinkles off of your window treatments.

First, you can lower them for a few days. If you raise and lower them constantly, they don’t have the chance to stay in one position for too long. You’ll want to lower them for around 2 to 3 days. Wrinkles should start disappearing on their own, which makes less work for you.

If you want to take action yourself, you can steam your blinds and shades to remove pesky wrinkles. This is the easiest solution available that requires intervention. Handheld steamers used on clothes can also be used on your window treatments. You want one that puts out a continuous stream of steam. Apply gentle pressure to the shade’s bottom while you steam it.
